2004 Miracle Ambassador
Age 18 - St. Louis Children's Hospital
For the first five years of Katie's life, she was a healthy and active child. At first, she didn't show any overt signs of anything beyond a normal childhood illnesses. However, as her symptoms became more frequent and developed into joint pain and inexplicable bruising, her parents knew something wasn't quite right.
On October 17, 2000, her parents took her to her pediatrician for an exam. After determining her spleen was enlarged, he immediately sent Katie to St. Louis Children's Hospital, where she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) later that day.
Katie immediately started treatment for ALL. During the 28-day Induction Phase (Stage 1), Katie received chemotherapy, a variety of drugs to enhance the chemotherapy, bone marry aspirations, and spinal taps. She continued to move through stages two and three successfully, and has remained in remission since.
Katie is now a very active student that loves hanging out with her friends, movies, sports, and being active. She's a member of her high school cross country and track teams, and is even trying to start a Dance Marathon at her high school!
