Mary
Evitts, Age 10
St. Louis Children’s Hospital
Mary
is truly a miracle. Born
prematurely, Mary was admitted to the NICU and stayed for four months
at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
In infancy, Mary was diagnosed with having stage 4
neuroblastoma, which is usually a fatal diagnosis.
At 3 pounds, 6 ounces, Mary was the youngest patient to ever
receive a chemotherapy regimen at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Mary
also has PVL (Periventricular leukomalacia) a condition in which the
brain tissue around the ventricles is damaged, possibly from decreased
oxygen or blood flow to the brain that may have occurred before,
during, or after delivery.
Many
years later, Mary is in remission but will still require many
outpatient services in therapy and psychology.
Mary
is now 10 years old and is a walking miracle according to her team of
doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
She’s very outgoing, very energetic, and is fully aware of
her condition. She
attends school and loves to give big hugs to her
friends.
