Josh
Nelson
Cardinal
Glennon Children’s Medical Center
On
the day Joshua was born, he seemed perfectly healthy, but his mother
was awoken later that night with news that he was being sent to
Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Hospital.
Four days later, he was diagnosed with end-stage Renal Disease.
Josh
had to endure 13 months of dialysis and by a miracle, began to
improve. He functioned well with just one kidney until he was five,
and then began having trouble again. He went on peritoneal dialysis,
being hooked up for 12 hours a day. Josh’s mother, Carolyn was
tested to see if she was able to donate one of her kidneys and she was
a near perfect match. With Carolyn at Saint Louis University Hospital
and Josh next door at Cardinal Glennon, doctors removed one of
Carolyn’s kidney, wheeled it over to Josh and it instantly began
functioning for Josh.
Josh
came home just two weeks later and began living a perfectly healthy,
normal life, thanks to his Mom and what she calls the Grace of God.
Josh
is an energetic, talkative, personable boy. He and his mother are both
avid Cardinal fans, he loves to play basketball, soccer and
volunteering at church. Josh and Carolyn have a very special bond and
it they are the best of friends. Josh is doing great medically and
emotionally and very thankful to have this chance at living a full
life.
